[SAN FRANCISCO] “Apocalypse Near“, a first novel by screenwriter Eric Haase won first place at The Green Book Festival in the electronic / interactive book category. The book combines the true account of Haase’s clinical death experience with cyberpunk science fiction elements & interactive media (animation, film clips & dynamic web pages). The author created the online media to intensify the book’s message about environmental predicaments, why they may be occurring & what he learned while clinically dead that could help avert further catastrophe.
“Apocalypse Near” was originally written as a feature film screenplay. Haase wrote the script while recovering from his temporarily fatal brain aneurysm. Haase simultaneously built consciousconsumers.net to supplement the action in the story. The author wrote the book version of “Apocalypse Near” under the pseudonym “E” because of the temporary loss of identity (a condition known as amnesiac fugue) that occurred shortly after the aneurysm. The pseudonym is integral to the first person narrative style he uses to weave the tale in “Apocalypse Near”. More information on the genesis of “Apocalypse Near” is available in the press release that announced the book’s publishing.

| The 2010 Green Book Festival has named “Climate Cover-Up: The Crusade to Deny Global Warming” as the winner of its annual competition honoring books that contribute to greater understanding, respect for and positive action on the changing worldwide environment.
Written by James Hoggan with Richard Littlemore, the book probes a campaign of disinformation surrounding climate change created by those with a vested interest in the status quo. Hoggan, who owns a Vancouver public relations firm, pinpoints specific efforts to deny the scientific consensus that humans are endangering the planet. The resulting pollution of the public conversation with partisan politics, disinformation, paid consultants disguised as experts and other tactics designed to create doubt is a frightening tale of spin doctoring disguised as truth. Hoggan and Littlemore, along with other competition victors, were honored at a private reception at The Hotel Rex in San Francisco on May 15.
